What does customizable software actually mean?

Let’s revisit a topic we’ve touched on before: What does “customizable software” really mean?

These days, every software company — especially with help from Cursor to Loveable — offers some level of customization. Whether it’s connecting via APIs, setting up event-based integrations, defining custom fields, or linking through tools like Zapier, customization is everywhere. But how does Thruline stand out? Aren’t we just another “customizable” business software?

We think about customization like the levels of self-driving cars. Here’s the breakdown:

Level 1: Simple Customization
Rename fields like “Part Number” to “Product.” You can send data out via APIs, but it needs custom coding and upkeep.
Examples: Calendly.

Level 2: Partial Customization
Add new data fields or attributes, but need third-party tools (Zapier, Parabola) or custom coding to share data.
Examples: Quickbooks, Fishbowl.

Level 3: Conditional Customization
Add fields, tweak the UI a bit (like hiding fields), create new data objects—but limited ways to use that data without coding. Basic event triggers might be included.
Examples: Hubspot, PipeDrive, Jira.

Level 4: High Customization
Build full data workflows and custom user views. Trigger events in other systems and add basic logic inside the app.
Examples: Netsuite, SAP, Benchling.

Level 5: Full Customization
Create entire custom applications, no code needed. Automate, send info between systems, build logic—all without starting from scratch.
Examples: Thruline, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Monday.com.

At Thruline, we don’t just help you document requirements or manage changes—we turn those requirements into ready-to-go setups that fit your business perfectly. We give you true customization early on, with complete change management, so you can ditch spreadsheets and focus on growing your business. That’s why our setup time is usually half that of other ERPs.

Lots of companies say their software is flexible—few explain what that really means. Want to hear how Thruline users are leveraging our platform? Join our monthly newsletter to stay in the loop!
